| Outdoorsy country life was the starting point for Ralph Lauren, whose collection referenced a modern huntress equipped with riding britches, blanket capes, and carriage coats. "I was inspired by the romance and the ruggedness of a modern shooting party," said Lauren. The designer rustled up great daywear pieces, like Fair Isle sweaters and vintage-looking glen plaid skirts; sexy leggings set off loden cardigans and tall suede boots. Especially covetable was an olive Tyrolean cashmere coat that was paired with a masculine shirt, tie, gloves, and feathered hat. Nighttime was romantic and sophisticated. Long beaded dresses were often accessorized with boots or croc belts. The most stunning of all was a sleek, black satin gown set off with beading at the cuffs. | ||||

| Donna Karan has built a major career by focusing on modern women's real-world needs. This collection was Karan at her best: chic and sophisticated, yet easygoing and accessible. Karan played with volumes to great effect. Her version of a cropped black and white houndstooth jacket came with an open neck, and was accompanied by a black tulip skirt. A great sleeveless camel dress drew attention to the waist not just with a strategically placed tab, but also with sheer tulle insets that nipped in from the back. A purple shift epitomized Karan's love of practical elegance: its only embellishment was a wide sash belt that artfully shaped the dress. Evening was not for wallflowers. The standout was a long, red halter gown with an Empire waist that left no doubt that great cut and proportions goes a lot farther than unnecessary frills. | ||||
